SCHOLARSHIP FUND
THE HILLBURN COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
P.O. Box 705, Hillburn, NY 10931
Dear Community Member: February, 2006
The Hillburn Community Scholarship Committee is proud to announce its fifth
annual Hillburn Community Scholarship Fund Drive. We are a volunteer
community-based organization committed to helping Hillburn students with college
or vocational education after high school.
Our plan is to name the Scholarship each year for a person who
served Hillburn youth and contributed significantly to our community. In so
doing, our community will come together to recognize the award recipient(s), as
well as to honor the individual for whom the award is named. This year we
are pleased to name the Hillburn Community Scholarship in honor of
Peter Galindez, who taught and mentored Hillburn youth for decades.
Applicants must be Hillburn residents who are graduating high school seniors
planning to attend college or vocational programs in the fall of 2006.
Applications will be available at the Village Office, and are due by April 14,
2006.
Because the proceeds for the Hillburn Community Scholarship must be raised
entirely by private donations, we are asking for your help. They say “it takes a
village to raise a child.” By donating to the Hillburn Community Scholarship
Fund, you can help a Hillburn student on the road to success! Last year the
Committee awarded a total of $ 8,000.00 to four deserving seniors.
Please send your donation in the form of a check or money order payable to:
The Hillburn Community Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 705, Hillburn, NY 10931.
An awards ceremony will be held Saturday, June 3, at 2 PM in the
Hillburn Community Room. Contributions to the Hillburn Community Scholarship
Fund received before May 5 will be acknowledged in the program at
that time.
On behalf of the Hillburn Community Scholarship Committee, thank you in advance
for your generous contribution.
Sincerely,

2006 Hillburn Community Scholarship Fund
In Honor of
PETER GALINDEZ, Sr.
The Hillburn Community Scholarship is awarded to a
graduating high school senior residing in Hillburn, who plans to further his or
her education beyond high school. Consideration is given to any student who
exhibits a high standard of personal achievement, school/community involvement,
and whose actions are a positive role model for peers.
We are proud to name the 2006 Hillburn Community Scholarship in honor of Peter
Galindez. Peter's heritage is Trinidadian, although he was born in Harlem (1934)
and graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens. He moved around as a child,
and was raised by a number of family members, but remembers especially his Aunt
Ada. After graduating from high school he attended Howard University where he
studied science, with a special interest in botany, and graduated with a B.S.
degree. He met his wife Mildred there; they have now been married almost 50
years.
Peter taught science for a year at a yeshiva in Spring Valley before enlisting
in the United States Air Force. He entered as a private, and after twenty years
of service, both active and in the reserves, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
During his active service he and Mildred had three children: May, born in
Washington, D.C. and now living in Hillburn; Mary, born in England, and now
living in Virginia; and Peter, Jr., born in France, now in the Air Force and
living in Mississippi. They are happy that all of their children attended
college and earned their degrees.
Along the way Peter did graduate work, also at Howard University, and received a
M.S. degree. Mildred was born and raised in Hillburn, which became their home
after traveling the world with the Air Force. Peter put his education, his
tutoring experience in the service, and parenting skills to excellent use
teaching at Suffern High School, grades 7 - 12, for twenty years. He taught
Earth Science, Physical Science, Biology, Environmental Science and Applied
Laboratory Techniques. He spent many of his afternoons mentoring students in the
Photography Club and the Rocket Club. He used rockets as a hook to get young
people interested in education. He was known to them as "The Rocket Man."
Peter based his life and his teaching on the precept that Everybody Can Achieve.
That is fundamental to the purpose of the Hillburn Community Scholarship, and
why we are proud to honor his extensive service.
